Why Early Childhood Education Changes Lives
In many low-income regions of Cambodia, teachers face nearly insurmountable challenges. Often, a single, inadequately trained teacher is responsible for 50 or more children—a situation that makes effective learning impossible. Children who do not attend preschool enter school without basic social, emotional, or cognitive preparation. This leads to chaos, frustration, and lost opportunities—not only for the children themselves, but also for the teachers and the entire education system.
Early childhood education is therefore not a luxury, but a crucial foundation. It gives children the skills they need to succeed in school and in life, while also relieving teachers who are already under immense pressure.
Preschool Project
The mission of the Go Ahead Organization preschool project is to provide independent education and a partnership of community preschool teachers, parents, and staff to prepare students to be lifelong learners who can become successful, productive future citizens. This will be accomplished by recognizing the value of each individual and promoting academic and personal growth in a challenging and caring environment.
Project Reach
- Go Ahead currently operates 8 kindergartens/preschools with a total of 182 children in the location of Triel Commune, Taing Kouk District, Kampong Thom Province.
- In addition, the organization supports 6 community preschools in the Triel community, serving 143 children.
- Altogether, 325 children benefit from this program.
To ensure that teachers in the community preschools can continue their important work, they receive monthly financial support—since their salaries do not reflect the responsibility and intensity of their work.
What the Project Makes Possible
- Clean drinking water: All kindergartens have access to clean water, protecting children’s health.
- Teacher training: Monthly and Yearly workshops strengthen professional skills and promote career development.
- Teaching materials: Resources are provided and co-developed to sustainably improve the quality of care.
- Successful transitions: Already 124 children have graduated from preschool and now attend first grade in public primary schools—a powerful testament to the project’s impact.
- Nutrition program: No child has to learn while hungry—all facilities provide meals.
- Curriculum alignment: All kindergartens follow the official Khmer preschool curriculum of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS).
